Art Therapy is a form of psychotherapy which can effect change and growth on a personal level through the use of art materials in a safe and facilitating environment. You need not have any prior experience of art to benefit from art therapy. The therapist is not there to judge your artistic abilities – but to help you make sense of your emotions and feelings in a creative way. "Psychotherapy takes place in the overlap of two areas of playing, that of the patient and that of the therapist. Psychotherapy has to do with two people playing together. The corollary of this is that where playing is not possible then the work done by the therapist is directed towards bringing the patient from a state of not being able to play into a state of being able to play."*D W Winnicott
Art Therapy sessions last 60 minutes and usually occur at the same place and at the same time each week. You will be invited to use the art materials to make whatever you wish and you can talk as much or as little as you like. I usually look after art work between sessions, until the end of therapy when you can chose what to do with it. Art Therapy, like other forms of psychotherapy is typically fairly long term clients commitment. A more realistic assessment of how many sessions may be appropriate can be discussed during your free initial assessment. Of course, the issues that we may face together are often complex and deep routed requiring much work. Some clients choose to continue their sessions indefinitely as it supports their week to week healing and growth.
Sessions are 60 minutes and cost £90. An initial telephone consultation is free of charge - There is, of course, no expectation that potential clients will undertake therapy wether or not it is deemed appropriate after this consultation.
